CoArt Space: a shared studio for artists in Tunis

July 1, 20265 min read

Today there are coworking spaces for entrepreneurs, freelancers and startups. But why shouldn’t there be a place designed the same way for artists? That is the question behind the CoArt Space: a shared studio for artists in Tunis, imagined as a place dedicated to visual-arts enthusiasts.

Once the classes are over, where do you keep creating?

The idea grew from a simple observation. Many people discover ceramics, painting or drawing through workshops and courses. They build a technique and gain confidence in their practice. But once the classes are over, one question often comes up: where do I continue?

For ceramists, the difficulty is even greater. Working with clay requires a suitable space and access to a ceramic kiln. Glazed pieces are particularly delicate to transport before firing: ideally, you decorate and fire them on site. The CoArt Space answers this need by providing an environment suited to ceramics, so you can carry out your projects in the best conditions.

Much more than a shared studio

Creating at home is a pleasure, but art also needs dialogue. A painter, a ceramist or a draughtsman progresses through personal practice, but also through the eyes of others. A conversation, a piece of advice, an exchange of ideas or simply creating in the same atmosphere can become a real source of inspiration.

That is the whole meaning of the prefix “Co”. It refers not only to sharing a space, but to collaboration, encounters, exchange and collective intelligence. Everyone develops their own artistic world while benefiting from the creative energy of a community.

A gallery to exhibit your work

Another dimension makes this concept particularly original: a gallery built into the centre. Because a work does not stop at its creation — it is also meant to be seen, shared and to meet its audience. This gallery gives artists the chance to exhibit their work and give value to their approach. So, in a single place, it becomes possible to create, exchange, experiment and exhibit.

A complete creative ecosystem

The CoArt Space is designed as a true artistic ecosystem, where each step of the creative process has its place:

  • Learn
  • Practise
  • Meet
  • Get inspired
  • Create
  • Exhibit

Opening hours made for your rhythm

Creativity is not limited to a few fixed hours in the week. Some like to work in the morning, others at the end of the day, after their professional or family duties. Some come back several times to the same piece, others prefer to create spontaneously, following their inspiration.

That is why the place was designed to be alive and accessible. The centre is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 10 pm, and Sunday from 2 pm to 10 pm. Monday is kept for preparing activities and the life of the place. This wide range of hours lets everyone find their own rhythm: working a piece all the way to its glazing and firing, coming to paint in a bright setting, exchanging with other enthusiasts, or simply taking the time to create.

A living art space in El Menzah 5

The CoArt Space is neither an art school, nor a mere shared studio, nor only a gallery. It is a living art space: a place to learn a technique, keep practising it, meet a community of enthusiasts, benefit from the eyes of others and, why not, exhibit your work.

Because art is not only learned: it is practised, shared and nourished by encounters. That is the whole ambition of Lik’Art’s Co-Art Space, at 114 Avenue d’Afrique, in El Menzah 5, Tunis.

Whether you have just finished a course or have been practising for years, the CoArt Space is a place to keep creating, sharing and exhibiting, at your own pace, in El Menzah 5.
